Carl is a lovely town in Barrow County, Georgia. It was officially named by the Georgia legislature in 1906 after the son of a prominent couple, who had a barber shop and general store in the town. It was then renamed Lawson but prior to that, it was named Dillard's Crossing.
Carl is situated 34°0′24″North and 83°48′43″West in Eastern Standard Time zone at an elevation of 1, 079 feet with estimated population of 228 in 2003. The town is all land with a total area of 0.8 square miles and population density of 258 people for every square mile.

Barrow County was created in 1914 as a settlement to the disputes among people of Winder, GA, those who lived at the boundaries of three counties. By then, from parts of Jackson, Gwinnett, and Walton counties, another county was created. The county was named in honor of the University of Georgia's long time chancellor, David Crenshaw "Uncle Dave" Barrow. Barrow is the home of former governor of Georgia and US Senator, Richard B. Russell, Jr. whose father, Richard Russell, Sr., was Georgia's Supreme Court Chief Justice from 1922-1938, who happened to swear his son as the state's governor.
A county seat of Barrow, Winder was then incorporated in 1893 upon the construction of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad across the town which was named after the railroad's president from North Carolina, John H. Winder. Winder was formerly called Brann, before its incorporation and prior to that.
